From 30 August to 1 September 2019, in the weekend when summer turns to fall, Copenhagen will transform into a busy junction for art and design. CHART Art Fair and CHART Design are back to manifest the Nordic art and design scenes among the most inspiring ones in the world right now.
CHART Design will present an ambitious programme of unique contemporary works, collectibles and limited-edition pieces from leading Nordic designers and design galleries. Additionally, there will be an extensive talk programme, focusing on contemporary Nordic design, its intersections with art, our craft heritage in a contemporary light, and look to the future of the design scene.
“CHART Design’s ambition is to create one entry point for collectible Nordic design. We have a strong design history across the Nordic countries and in recent years we have seen an extensive development within the field from a younger and increasingly cross-disciplinary generation. We want to stimulate this development by bringing together the different agents working within the field, ranging from gallerists and professionals over practicing artists, designers, and craft-makers to the collectors and the public,” says Nanna Hjortenberg, Director of CHART.
CHART Design in two locations
CHART Design will take place at Den Frie in Copenhagen. The design fair will feature a selection of the leading Nordic design galleries and studios. The wide-ranging selection incudes textile pieces by Kuoshi Yamamoto (RAM Galleri), experimental works by Sigve Knutson (Galleri Format Oslo), furniture by Fredrik Paulsen (Etage Projects) and much more. For the first time, the design fair will also present a handful of emerging design studios.
A newcomer to the CHART family is the curated exhibition Matters – rethinking materials. As part of CHART’s Curio programme the exhibition aims to showcase young design talents in a non-commercial context in close collaboration with Designmuseum Danmark. The exhibition will introduce the practice of five young designers who are making a great effort to appoach the use of materials in new ways.
“Matters explores new and uncharted perspectives on materials that are often considered useless by humans by challenging both its synthetic and organic ecosystems. A conceptual crossing of the show connects two precise points: the arrival point where the recent world of material turns to debris, urging a renewal of characteristics and the departure point where the ancient world of natural substances is considered as new material components,” says Line Ulrika Christiansen, curator of Matters.
